DFT New Employee Referral Program

    As you know, the District is actively recruiting and hiring teachers and other ancillary teacher positions. In fact, two years ago we had 275 teacher vacancies. With two weeks remaining before the school year begins this year we have fewer than 100 vacancies to fill. However, our students and our colleagues deserve to be fully staffed. We believe you can help us close this gap and ensure we continue to recruit and hire teachers and ancillary staff throughout the year. In the end, you are best positioned to use your social and professional networks to promote the district and your individual schools. Your confidence in our work can convince an employee to join us. To incentivize the referral process we have negotiated an agreement with the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) to allow dues and non-dues paying unit members to receive a $1,000 referral bonus if a teacher or ancillary teacher is hired and referred by an employee in these groups. The referral process is not retroactive and begins August 19th at 12:01 a.m. with new hires.   

    If an employee you recommend is hired, and identifies you as a reference, then you will have the opportunity to earn $1,000 for each new employee after they complete their first ninety (90) workdays.  Additional details about the District’s new employee referral process are below.

     


    Which positions are eligible for the referral?

    New hire candidates listed in the table below who are referred to the District by actively employed DFT members.  Candidates must identify their referring employee by name, email, and telephone number when completing their application in Peoplesoft using the referral function. No exceptions.  The District will use the information provided by the candidate to confirm the referral prior to disbursement and payment of any bonus.  Bonuses will only be paid to active employees for each candidate they successfully refer who is hired by the District and remains in good standing in their position for at least ninety (90) days.


    Who is eligible to receive the $1,000 referral bonus?

    Any DFT member who successfully refers a candidate to the District who is successfully hired into any of the following classifications: Teacher (0250) or Master teacher (0251) Audiologist C.C.C. (0310), Behavior Specialist (A500), Counselor-Promoted (1540), Guidance Counselor (0270), IEP Compliance Specialist (A520), Nurse Registered-Degreed (0150), Orientation & Mobility Specialist (0160), Psychologist (School Diagnostic) (0200), School Social Worker (0230)  Special Education Transition Specialist (A510), Speech Pathologist C.C.C. (0320), Teacher-Consultant (A0300), Occupational Therapist (0170), Physical Therapist (0180), will receive a bonus of $1,000.00, per candidate.  New employees you refer must identify you as the referral source when they apply.  If they do not, then the District will be unable to confirm the source and you will not receive payment.  Referred candidates cannot be current District employees.  Please do not forget to remind each candidate you refer to list you on their application.


    Is there a limit to the number of employee referrals a DFT unit member may make in the 2019-20 academic year?

    No.  There is no limit to the number of new designated employee referrals a DFT unit member may make in the 2019-20 academic year. DFT members are eligible to earn a $1,000 referral bonus for each successful referral who meets the stated criteria.


    When will I be compensated for successful employee referrals?

    Referral bonuses will be paid after the new employee completes ninety (90) days of consecutive work in their position. Successful candidate referrals during the period of August 1, 2019 through December 1, 2019 will have referral bonuses paid by January 20, 2019.   Successful candidate referrals during the period of December 2, 2019 through May 1, 2020 will have referral bonuses paid by June 26, 2020.  Referring DFT unit members must remain employed with the District to receive earned referral bonuses.


    What if I have already referred a candidate who has been hired? What if more than one referral occurs?

    We are thankful for you continuing to share information with your networks about DPSCD positions, however, bonuses will only be paid for successful referrals made after the date of August 19. All referrals submitted through this employee referral program will be considered eligible for the duration of the 2019-2020 school year.  If we have already made contact with a candidate who is referred, that referral will not be eligible for a bonus.  If more than one person refers a candidate, the bonus will be awarded to the person who made the first referral.

    In addition to reaching out directly to those you think may be interested, consider sharing posts from our Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter on your own social media pages.  Consider sharing at your place of worship.  Please remember that if someone applies for a position listed above after seeing your post, they will need to list you as a reference.


    When will the District’s employee referral program end?

    The District’s employee referral program will only be valid for the 2019-2020 academic year.  The District reserves the right to terminate the referral bonus program once it reaches fully staffed status, or to reinstitute the referral bonus programs should teacher staffing levels fall below fully staffed status.
