We are here to support your family.
The Office of Homeless and Foster Care (OHFC) protects the educational rights of homeless & foster youth, by removing barriers to education. Our goal is to identify and support homeless youth so each student can successfully participate in the learning environment and meet state and local academic achievement standards. We ensure homeless children are free from discrimination, segregation, and harassment.

The Office of Homeless and Foster Care (OHFC) has a basic needs pantry that provides students who may not have a stable place to stay, with items they may need. This may include hygiene and household items, non-perishable food, masks, and clothing/shoes (based on available sizes), and clothing vouchers. If your family is in need of these items, email us at ohfc@detroitk12.org.

We provide transportation help to homeless students who continue their education at their school of origin, including students temporarily living outside of the Detroit area due to homelessness. Homeless students are also eligible for transportation travel to and from all school-related activities. Reach out to us if your family is in need of:
- DDOT Fare Cards
- Gas Cards
- DPSCD Busses
- Transportation for students living outside of Detroit, but attending DPSCD
Note for students in grades 9-12: They will receive a 31-day DDOT public transportation pass each month from the office at their home school. Students can use this pass to ride DDOT for free but must show their DPSCD student ID to the bus driver.
Note for students in grades PK-8: Adults responsible for eligible students in grades PK-8 may receive DDOT bus passes to accompany the student to and from school. A parent is also eligible for transportation assistance to attend school-related activities, such as report card pick-up, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings or graduation.
