A student suspected of having a disability must be evaluated for special education and determined eligible in order to receive special education programs and services.
A multidisciplinary evaluation team (MET) evaluates students for suspected disabilities. The MET includes specialists with knowledge of the suspected disabilities.
The Special Education Evaluation Process
This outline gives a brief overview of the referral, evaluation, and placement process. Since the process is individualized, differences may occur.

GENERAL EDUCATION INTERVENTIONS
Instructional modifications/accommodations are implemented in the general education settings. Examples: Building Team, English Language Learner (ELL), School Support Teams (i.e. ILT and CLT), and Title 1.

REFERRAL
A formal document is written asserting suspicion of the student having a disability.

PARENT NOTIFICATION
Upon receipt of a written referral, the District has 10 school days to contact parent and request consent.

PARENTAL CONSENT/PROCEDURAL SAFEGUARDS
Parent/Legal Guardian signs informed consent form which gives permission for the evaluation process to proceed. Parent receives a copy of Procedural Safeguards a this time.

EVALUATION BY MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM (MET)
MET is completed within 30 school days from receiving the signed consent form.

Parents are invited to attend. Eligibility recommendation is documented. This most often happens in concurrence with IEPT meeting.

INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATIONAL PLANNING TEAM (IEPT)
Parents are invited to attend. Special Education eligibility is determined. Programs and services are recommended. IEP is developed within 30 school days from receiving the signed consent form.
