DETROIT – Oct 1, 2021 – Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) Board President Angelique Peterson-Mayberry is one of nine finalists for this year’s Green-Garner award, the nation’s highest urban education honor, which recognizes outstanding contributions in urban education.   This is the 32nd year for the award which is presented by the Council of the Great City Schools. 

Peterson-Mayberry joined the DPSCD Board in 2017 and was elected Vice President. In 2020, she won re-election to the board and was named Board President.  Peterson-Mayberry is a graduate of M.L. King High School and holds a Bachelor of Administration Degree from Detroit College of Business. She also serves as a Global Manufacturing Business Development Analyst at Ford Motor Company.

“Angelique Peterson-Mayberry is relentless advocate for students and families in DPSCD,” said Dr. Nikolai Vitti, Superintendent, DPSCD. “She is a servant leader who wakes up every day prepared to problem solve no matter the size of the challenge.   She is determined and focused on the goal of all students having the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to thrive not only in Detroit but across the globe. It is a privilege to work with her daily to rebuild the district as a superintendent and school board team.”  

“Ms. Peterson-Mayberry is very involved with the school. She has a personal touch and makes everything feel like a family environment, which is why I have my children attend DPSCD.” Said Matthew Williamson, DPSCD parent.  

The winner will be announced at the Council of the Great City Schools’ 65th Annual Conference on October 19th, 2021 and the winner will receive a $10,000 college scholarship to present to a senior in a high school from their school system.  The Green-Garner Award is the namesake of Richard Green, the first African American chancellor of the New York City school system and a businessman and Edward Garner, the former school board president of the Denver Public Schools.
