2023 Admissions
Detroit Public Schools Community District offers enrollment in six selective admission high school programs, which offer rigorous college preparation, career preparation, competitive athletics programs, and inspiring arts programs. Students are required to take an examination for admission consideration.

- Communication and Media Arts High School
- Renaissance High School
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School
- Southeastern High School
- The School at Marygrove

1. Application
An online application is required. An email address and password for Submittable are needed to set up an account. The contact information provided in the application should also belong, or be accessible to, a parent or guardian. The application allows for collaboration so that one or more additional people can view the application while it is in progress.
Three applications will be available for students seeking admission to an examination high school during the 2022-23 admissions cycle. The second round application for Fall 2023 will open at noon Monday, February 27, 2023. Please click here to complete an interest survey to share your contact information so we may keep you updated.

- Students entering 9th grade in Fall 2023
- Current high school students seeking to transfer to an exam high school for admission in Fall 2023
- Current DPSCD examination high school students who want to transfer to a different examination high school

Application Guidelines

Parents/Guardians are expected to complete the application.
- Students who apply during Round 1 may not apply during Round 2.
- Applicants are responsible for monitoring the email associated with their Submittable account. All communications regarding the application will be sent to the email address on file.

Applicants are required to take an examination in order to be considered for admission.

All deadlines are final, including application deadlines, petition deadlines and, if applicable, enrollment deadlines.

Please review the application carefully before submitting. Applicants may save the application in progress and return to make as many changes as necessary prior to submitting it.

Do not submit more than one application for the same student. Additional applications for the same candidate will be withdrawn by the Admissions Team.

You may email exam.schools@detroitk12.org or use Submittable, the application platform, to send a message requesting the opportunity to edit or update your application after it has been submitted. Requests must be submitted prior to the application deadline. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions for information about updating or editing a previously submitted application.

2. Test
The High School Placement Test is required for all applicants. The exam covers Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Science.
- Current District 8th grade students take the exam during school.
- Other students must select an exam date in the application.

3. Decision
Applicants who took the exam are notified of their admission decision via email or a message that can be retrieved by logging into the Submittable account.
Applicants may only be accepted into one school.

4. Enrollment
Accepted students are required to enroll in their school to confirm their seat.
Enrollment instructions will be included in the acceptance letter. Some schools require students to select courses by the enrollment deadline.

5. Petition
Applicants who did not receive their desired placement may petition for admission consideration.
Schools make admissions decisions.
Petition requirements are an essay, two letters of recommendation, and a third letter or artifact.
