GENERAL EXAMINATION HIGH SCHOOL QUESTIONS
What is an examination high school?
The district’s five examination high schools require an examination and application for admission consideration. The district also has selective admission high schools that require an application, but not an examination. Learn more at detroitk12.org/applicationschools.
Who may apply?
Eighth grade students attending public and non-public schools, including home school, are eligible to apply for 9th grade. Current high school students may also apply for limited openings in grades 10-12. The School at Marygrove is only an option for current 8th and 9th grade students.
Who should complete the application?
The application should be completed by a parent or guardian. Parents/guardians are expected to electronically sign the application. The application should be completed in the student’s name, not the name of the parent/guardian.
I am seeking fall admission to an exam high school for my 12th grade year. How do I apply?
Current 11th graders who will be entering the 12th grade will only be allowed to apply if at least one of the following is true:
- They previously attended the desired exam high school.
- Their current school will be closed during the 2019-20 school year.
- They can provide documentation that they recently moved to Detroit from another city that is not in the immediate vicinity of Detroit.
Do any exam high schools give preference to students who live in the immediate vicinity of the school?
The School at Marygrove College is the only exam high school that gives neighborhood residents preference in admissions.
I previously attended an exam high school. How do I apply to return?
Students who would like to return may complete the examination high school application. Students who were previously dismissed for academic or other reasons, or were eligible to be dismissed, will be required to take the exam. All applicants must select a test date. Students who are determined to be exempt from the exam will be notified of that exemption.
What is a transfer student?
A transfer student is a current high school student who is seeking to transfer from their current high school to an exam high school for fall 2020.
What is a mid-year transfer?
A mid-year transfer is a student in grade 10 or 11 who is seeking admission to an exam high school for a January 2020 start. These students may transfer at the mid-semester break. Current 9th graders who recently relocated to this area may also apply. Students who unsuccessfully applied for fall 2019 admission are not eligible for a mid-year transfer.
