Get inspired by Laurin Edwards' journey, a passionate sophomore student photographer at Cass Technical High School who shares her insights and experiences in our exclusive Q&A session. Dive into her early fascination with capturing moments and discover how she mastered the art of storytelling through her lens. Laurin's dedication to photography shines brightly in every shot, making her story one you won't want to miss!
Early Passion for Photography
Laurin shares what fuels her passion for photography and what inspired her to pursue it as a career.
A: My passion for photography is fueled by the opportunity to capture moments that spark emotional connections. It's deeply sentimental when I photograph moments that people can later reflect on and cherish. Knowing the impact my work has on others inspires me to continuously create and connect with more people. Whether I'm capturing beautiful scenery, life milestones, sports, or entertainment, it feels rewarding to know that I'm preserving moments in time that can be revisited for years to come. The best aspect of photography for me is helping people relive priceless memories through captured images.
Signature Style in Sports Photography
While Laurin has an eye for capturing a variety of subjects, there is a special place in her heart for sports photography. As a high school student-athlete herself, Laurin understands the intensity, dedication, and emotion that accompany sports. She aims to cover not just the action, but the stories, struggles, and triumphs of athletes. Her photos go beyond the game, capturing the spirit and determination of those who give their all on the field, court, or track. Laurin's unique perspective as an athlete allows her to connect deeply with her subjects, making each shot a powerful narrative of hard work and perseverance.
Achievements and Notable Projects
Laurin’s talent and dedication have already garnered significant recognition at DPSCD. Most notably, she was the only student photographer invited to capture the 55th Annual Evening of Fine Arts at the historic Detroit Fox Theatre. This prestigious event celebrated artistic talents and brought together performers and artists from various disciplines. Laurin's role was to document her peers in action, both on and off the stage, capturing the raw talent and emotion of the evening.
Tips for Graduation Season
As graduation season approaches, student photographer Laurin shares valuable tips with her peers.
A: As we enter graduation season, my photo tip for the graduating senior class is to be captured in many photos as they close out this chapter in their lives and prepare to open the next. In addition to pictures with family and friends, I'm encouraging them to include teachers, coaches, mentors, and people who have impacted their lives and helped them reach this point. As these moments are captured, they may be very emotional, with smiles, laughs, and even tears. Either way, it's part of the preservation of their journey. My tip for my underclassmen peers would be to make the most out of these high school years. Work hard towards your academic goals, join a club or sport, participate in school activities, volunteer, and connect with peers. By doing this, you're not only making the most of your high school experience but also creating exciting memories along your high school journey for photographers like me to capture.
Dream Event to Photograph
Laurin reflects on her dream of becoming a photographer and, given the chance, she would choose to capture her passion: sports photography.
A: If there were one event that I could photograph, it would be the Division I NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament weekend. It's a weekend of exciting times, people making connections, record-breaking crowds dressed in their favorite team's apparel, and a high level of competition among players competing to be named national champions! As a high school student-athlete, I know the hard work, sacrifice, and balance that is required from day to day. I can only imagine how hard those athletes work at their level to reach the national stage. The opportunity to cover interviews of athletes telling their stories, the national championship game, and highlights from the entire weekend would be meaningful to me. As I know, making it to that point wasn't easy, and I have so much respect for the hard work they put in to get there.
