Graduation: A Life Changing Milestone for Kyla Stephens
Graduation season is here, and Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) is celebrating the accomplishments of its high school seniors as they reach the culmination of their academic journeys in the district. For Kyla Stephens, Central High School’s Valedictorian, reflecting on her academic achievements through the years fills her with a sense of pride as she is reminded of the countless hours of hard work, dedication and perseverance poured into this life-changing milestone.
“Being named Valedictorian means the absolute world to me,” said Stephen's. “Constantly staying on top of all my assignments and asking for help when needed, helped me tremendously with my academic success.”
“Some of the biggest challenges I faced during high school were adjusting to [in-person] after being virtual for two years and learning how to be social again. But, throughout all the challenges I faced, my freshman algebra teacher, Ms. Fisher, has been the biggest inspiration throughout my academic journey. She always encourages me to do my best and finish high school strong”
Stephens proudly announced she will be attending Michigan State University this fall. She said, “I aspire to become a marine biologist and explore the ocean. This fall I will be attending Michigan State University and studying biology.”
“My advice for my fellow peers aiming to achieve academic success is to never be afraid to ask for help, even the strongest people need help sometimes. Also, never put off what can be done today, for tomorrow; because it will often lead you down the path of procrastination which is never a good thing.
Stephens offered this as a reflection of her time here at DPSCD, “DPSCD has helped me rise by giving me the support and leadership needed to become academically successful and I will be forever grateful.”
