Facility Master Plan Continues Community Engagement Sessions for Current Projects

New schools are coming to your neighborhood! In October, Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) held a series of virtual community engagement sessions to provide design and construction updates to community members who will experience new school buildings in the coming years. Current projects include:

  • Pershing High School (New Building)
  • Paul Robeson Malcolm X Elementary Middle School (New Building)
  • Carstens Academy of Aquatic Science Elementary Middle School (New Building)
  • Southeastern High School CTE Annex (New Building)
  • Davis Aerospace High School and City Airport (Renovations)

The four virtual community engagement sessions provided information about the specific plans for each current project. Presentations focused on school design, site analysis, conceptual layout, and construction timelines for each school project and were presented by Assistant Superintendent of Operations Machion Jackson, project managers, design, and construction teams. Community members were allowed to ask questions via chat, which were answered during the question-and-answer portion of the meeting.

These community conversations aim to provide transparency and ongoing dialogue and prioritize feedback from the students, staff, families, and community-at-large. Board members who attended these sessions included Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, Dr. Iris Taylor, Misha Stallworth-West, Sonya Mays and Bishop Corletta J. Vaughn. [BH1] These sessions are an essential part of the District’s school design process. Dates for upcoming sessions will be announced throughout the process.

The Facility Master Plan is funded by a $700 million one-time investment, carved out of the pandemic federal funding to revitalize DPSCD schools at no cost to taxpayers.
