Join Us at Drew Farm for Annual Harvest Fest on Oct. 7!
Students and their families are invited to celebrate fall on Saturday, October 7, with the Office of School Nutrition's (OSN) Harvest Fest at Drew Farm!
Held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the free festival is a celebration to promote healthy living and eating for DPSCD families and the community. Free pumpkins will be available while supplies last. Refreshments include apple cider, donuts, caramel apples, cotton candy, and popcorn. The event will feature hayrides, a corn maze, pumpkin painting, face painting, games, smoothie demos, and more. Food Corps team members will facilitate activity stations and lead Drew Farm tours.
“As a kick-off to National Farm-to-School Month, this free, family-friendly event showcases DPSCD's Drew Farm, a two-acre food production and education farm site that grows over 20,000 pounds of organically grown produce a year,” said Matthew Hargis, OSN garden supervisor.
The farm is located at Drew Transition Center, 9600 Wyoming St., Detroit. Sponsors for the event include Bioneers, Detroit Peoples Food Co-op, Keep Growing Detroit, Detroit Hives, Green Door Initiative, Green Living Science, Edible Wow, Sylhet Farms and Community Garden, International Institute of Metro Detroit, and Food Corps Michigan.
The Farm-to-School Initiative includes Drew Farm and 82 school garden sites. Drew Farm includes six hoop houses that produce thousands of pounds of various greens, root vegetables, non-GMO sweet corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, and other produce.
