A lifelong Detroiter, Georgella Muirhead says that being a DPS graduate is one of the best things that could have happened in her life.

The CEO of 98Forward, Michigan's largest minority-owned public relations agency, Muirhead is a graduate of Eastern High School and will be participating in this year’s DPSCD Come Home Alumni Festivities. She credits her education for giving her the building blocks to help her reach her goals and to now give back to the next generation and to the community.

Are there any specific memories of your time at DPSCD that stick out to you? Any DPSCD teachers or staff members who made an impact?

I loved music and I participated in a lot of vocal opportunities. I was in the choir and in the District choir in high school. The performance of the students at The Fox is something I still look forward to because those are the concerts, I looked forward to growing up. When I was in school, they sent students to Oakland University for a summer camp at Meadowbrook and I was one of the first students from Detroit to go. It was intense and very exciting.

What does it mean to you to be a DPS Alumna?

I think that for me and for those in my family, it provided a strong foundation for what we achieved and wanted to achieve as we moved on in life. I learned along the way of having a goal and striving towards that goal, the belief you could be successful, and that there were no limits. Those building blocks helped me and it gave me a desire to give back. For me, being a DPS grad is one of the best things that could have happened to me in my life.

What are you looking forward to for the Coming Home alumni festivities?

I will definitely be there! We sponsored the event last year as well and will be participating in all the activities.

What advice would you give DPSCD students?

I think students need to be focused on their own personal experiences and on what they are getting out of the system and not on news articles and people’s opinions. Going to a DPSCD school and that foundation, if you put in your efforts, will take you as far as you want to go. You get to work with teachers and administrators who may also be your neighbors and you are in school with your neighbors. It is special to go to a hometown school.
