Background Published 2/17
The Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) invites the community to cheer on the new generation of PSL (Public School League) basketball legends during the PSL Basketball Championship on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at the Wayne State University Fieldhouse. Game times will be at 1 p.m. (Unified Championship); 3 p.m. (Girls Varsity Championship) and 5 p.m. (Boys Varsity Championship).
Unified Championship Makes History
Thanks to a strong partnership between DPSCD’s Office of Athletics and the Office of Exceptional Student Education (ESE), the Unified League was created this school year, enabling students with or without an intellectual or developmental disability, an opportunity to participate in basketball and play in a championship game.
“The goal of the program is to have sports foster relationships on and off the court,” said Sarah Jardine, Supervisor Adapted Physical Education and Special Olympics with DPSCD. “The inception of the Unified League, culminating with our championship between teams from Cody and Central, supports DPSCD’s initiative to ensure that all students are included,” said Jardine, noting that Unified League teams can be co-ed (male and female) although the teams from Cody and Central this year are all male. “We hope it is the beginning of more sports like this to come,” she added.
