Latin Grammys Deliver Gift of Musical Instruments Thurs. Dec. 8
When we hear anything Grammy related, the anticipation swells and we know there will be winning involved. The Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation (LGCF), as part of its Latin Grammy in the Schools program, will present DPSCD’s Academy of the Americas (AOA) with dozens of new musical instruments, thanks to a generous gift from the Ford Motor Company Fund (FMCF) to purchase the equipment. The presentation ceremony is at Noon, Thursday, December 8, 2022, in AOA’s refurbished gymnasium, featuring a special guest performing artist and many other special guests.
“This will be a tremendous asset to us,” said AOA Principal Nicholas Brown. “We will be able to provide music experiences to more of our students as well as promote professional opportunities,” he added, noting some of the instruments will be used in after-school music programming as well as toward a resumption of its mariachi band.
Under the direction of Maestra Isabella Karcorian, AOA’s Director of Bands and Music, students in grades 4-8 attend band class and there is also a band class for aspiring high school musicians. With many new student band members, Isabella has been inspired by the dedication and eagerness of her student musicians. “The kids come in before school, at lunchtime, during recess, and after school to practice independently,” said Isabella. “Preparing to perform for the Latin Grammy visit is our students greatest opportunity to grow as musicians, since this is the highest profile event we will have done. We are grateful and thrilled to be selected.”
