DPSCD Develops Legends with Computer Science Programming and Activities

With support from Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) Offices of Computer Science and Information Technology, three groups of DPSCD students are again participating in the Student Technology Showcase at the State Capitol in Lansing, Michigan on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, in conjunction with the national recognition of Computer Science Education Week, December 5, -December 11, 2022.

DPSCD students from Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School, Academy of the Americas, and Neinas Dual Language Academy will demonstrate best practices of how technology can enhance teaching and learning success for DPSCD students to lawmakers, business leaders and citizens invited to the event. The trip for DPSCD students to the Technology Showcase is another way DPSCD is putting Students First, by building a pathway of courses for students to take in the computer science and technology areas, starting in kindergarten through 12th grade, says Shanita Canady, Senior Director of DPSCD’s Office of Computer Science.

“We know technology is everywhere and in everything,” said Ms. Canady. “So regardless if a student wants to have a career in computer science or not, having knowledge of areas such as coding is going to increase their computational thinking skills as well as their ability to perform and learn well in any career area,” she said. “That’s why we also have a variety of enrichment activities such as coding clubs, robotics and engineering courses,” Ms. Canady added, noting that DPSCD is also providing networking and internship opportunities for students in these and other career pathway programs.

While the students head to Lansing, Ms. Canady will visit several DPSCD schools throughout the week and conduct coding sessions with students at those schools. And DPSCD students were part of the 12-hour D-HACK Hackathon that took place on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at the Ford Resource and Engagement Center (FREC) in which State of Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, WXYZ-TV anchor Carolyn Clifford and DPSCD Assistant Superintendent Alycia Meriweather also attended.
