Students Rise with Kickoff of DPSCD Summer Learning Experiences

For DPSCD student Judah Shelton, the start of Summer Learning Experiences on Monday, July 12, 2021, marked a fresh start for him academically and socially.

Shelton, who is taking his summer school classes at Mumford High School, struggled as he adjusted to a virtual school year last fall that included the difficulty of making new friends while learning online. “He (Judah) needs to be back in school,” said his mom, Arlyssa Heard, who noted his need to be with other students as well as her comfort with the District’s safety mitigation strategies for in-person learning.  “Online school was not for Judah.”

In addition to academic enrichment opportunities for Judah and thousands of DPSCD students this summer, they all have the opportunity to participate in fun enrichment and recreational activities, something Arlyssa said is vital for Judah and reflective of DPSCD’s priority of a Whole Child Commitment.

“He’s an ‘outdoorsman’,” said Arlyssa of Judah. “He has to be in a sports activity, she noted his love for football and running. “He needs to be moving and doing something, that’s how he learns best.” Through its partnerships, DPSCD is providing students with an array of enrichment activities to choose from this summer ranging from school-based programming such as sports camps, cooking, STEM activities and academic games as well as neighborhood programming focused on comprehensive youth development.

As thousands of students engage in academic enrichment and credit recovery this summer, the District is planning for the start of the 21-22 school year to begin on Tuesday, September 7, 2021. To help you get ready, save the date and plan to attend the Back to School Expo on Saturday, August 28, 2021. Students will be able to get their immunizations including those eligible for COVID-19 as well as well as meet and greet school staff, explore programming while enjoying food and family friendly games.

Plan to attend the Back to Expo on Saturday, August 28, 2021 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at one of three convenient locations: East English Village Preparatory Academy, Western International High School, and the Randolph Career Tech Center. Look for more details on DPSCD social media platforms and in our parent and partner e-newsletters. We can’t wait to see you at Expo and in school this fall, starting September 7, 2021 on the first day of school!
