Exceptional Math Teacher Embodies a Standard of Excellence for Students and Teachers Alike

For more than two decades, Calandra Gibson has been a math teacher at Detroit School of Arts (DSA). During that time, Gibson has been known to go above and beyond, often staying after school to tutor, mentor and help with the school’s art program.Calandra Gibson

During the COVID-19 school shut down last spring, Gibson immediately rallied a group of teachers to quickly and efficiently learn Microsoft Teams in order to be of service to their students.

It was just the latest in her long-time commitment to DPSCD students. Throughout the years, Gibson has established good relationships with parents and her colleagues—critical to providing students with the best opportunities for success.

Gibson also takes pride in working to develop rigorous math lessons to provide an equitable education for her students.

It was no surprise when, over the summer, Gibson was asked to step into an interim master teacher position and construct math lessons for the high school level. Once again, she quickly navigated new online platforms to accomplish the task in a short period of time.

As a result of her undying commitment, Gibson inspires all those around her. She often tells her students, “I can want as much success as you, but I can’t want your success more than you.”
