Don't Miss Out: Apply to the DPSCD Police Oversight Committee by July 31

DPSCD Police Department Oversight Committee Application

Be a voice for the community. 

The purpose of the oversight committee will be to receive and address public complaints concerning the District’s police agency and recommend to the public body that an investigation be conducted regarding alleged misconduct by a law enforcement officer from that law enforcement agency.

In addition, the Board created a School Safety Task Force, which will be charged with two items: 1) to assess the current safety environment for the District, and 2) to bring back recommendations to the Board for consideration.

The Oversight Committee will be composed of seven members. Three members will serve for a three- year term and be:

  • 1 elected official from City of Detroit and/or Wayne County
  • 1 individual representing the general public who resides within City of Detroit
  • 1 representative of the Detroit Public Schools Community District Police Department, Detroit Police Department or Wayne County Sherriff’s Department, not of supervisory or management rank

In addition, four members will serve for a two-year term and be:

  • 1 elected official from City of Detroit and/or Wayne County
  • 1 individual representing the general public who resides within City of Detroit
  • 1 representative of the Detroit Public Schools Community District Police Department, Detroit Police Department or Wayne County Sherriff’s Department, not of supervisory or management rank
  • 1 individual from the DPSCD Board of Education School Safety Taskforce (no application accepted; will be appointed by Board)

Those interested in being on the committee are invited to apply under the following guidelines:

  • Submit resume (in addition to experience, must also list full name, street address, email address and telephone).
  • Submit statement (no longer than 1 page) explaining:
    • Which seat you are applying for (e., elected official, general public member, police officer, etc.);
    • Your experiences and skills that prepare you to serve on the committee; and
    • Why you want to serve on committee and are the best candidate.
  • All submissions will be reviewed. Some candidates will advance for an interview and selected finalists will be considered by the full Board.
  • Submit resume and statement to karen.morgan@detroitk12.org by no later than July 31, 2020

In accordance with the State of Michigan Public Body Law Enforcement Agency Act of 2004, which requires that a police agency have an oversight committee, the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) Board of Education approved the establishment of an oversight committee of the DPSCD Police Department.
