Bates' Student Malaya Johnson Earns Float Design Grand Prize!
DPSCD Students Recognized for their 2019 America’s Thanksgiving Parade Float Designs
From over 1,000 entries, six area Detroit students were recognized for their float design in hopes their submission would be built by The Parade Company. One student from Detroit Public Schools Community District was chosen as the Grand Prize Winner for the 2019 America’s Thanksgiving Parade presented by Art Van, and three additional students earned Honorable Mention. Malaya Johnson, a Bates Academy 5th Grader, was awarded the Grand Prize Winner in The Skillman Foundation’s Float Design Contest. Malaya Johnson’s float design titled “You Have a Choice” will travel the entire parade route down Woodward Avenue on Thanksgiving morning on Thursday, November 28, 2019. As the winner, Malaya and her family will receive an unforgettable Parade package beginning with an opportunity to ride along on the “You Have a Choice” float, grandstand seat tickets, tour at The Parade Company inccuding a class pizza lunch, and a commemorative plaque.
The Grand Prize Winner and three DPSCD students that earned Honorable Mention were recognized during a formal unveiling press conference celebration on Monday, November 25, 2019.
