In Memory of Those We've Lost

  • The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has had an unprecedented impact on all of our lives. Tragically, it has also affected our ability to pay tribute to loved ones who have passed due to the growing number of confirmed cases, deaths, and privacy. This section of the web is dedicated to honoring DPSCD employees or families we have lost due to the virus.

This is an incredibly difficult time for our community, and we are so proud of all the ways we have come together already. With schools on an extended closure for the remainder of the school year, we have developed resources for continued student learning while school remains closed. In the spirit of getting started and learning together, we have posted here all academic packets for students in Grades K-12.

    Opportunities to Connect

Staying in touch with students and families is a top priority.

    • Teachers will connect with students via TEAMS or by email or phone each week.
    • Microsoft Teams is an app in the Microsoft suite, that enables teachers, students and staff to talk and video, chat, to share written messages (similar to text messaging), as well as share documents and assignments. Teachers and students can also schedule meetings and collaborate with other students (teams). Each DPSCD employee and student have five FREE licenses to use this app and Microsoft Office using their district email address.
    • Teams is set up and ready to use for students. Families can also download the Teams app for Android or Apple iOS and login directly with their student’s credentials through Clever.
    • Teachers will provide feedback on student work completion for the week.
    • Parents are encouraged to reach out to teachers and principals with questions or requests for additional support.
    • The District will maintain and continue to update an FAQ with questions that you need answered.
    • The District will continue to offer the Homework Hotline: https://www.detroitk12.org/homeworkhotline

    Opportunities to Learn

The District has developed 10 weeks of academic work for students.

    • Recommended student schedules for each grade band can be found by clicking one of the grade band links above.
    • Academic work includes ELA/Reading, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Art, Music, and Physical Education
    • These materials will also be available in printed form at the District’s Grab and Go Sites.
    • Lessons in academic packets are supported by lesson videos on the District YouTube Channel and from Knowledge-On-The-Go for K-8 Math.
    • We will continue to offer Online Learning through Clever
    • Your teacher will contact you and based on your access will recommend how he/she will engage with your child and give feedback on their work.

    How You Can Help

Parents and Guardians are critical partners in this new way of learning.

    • Monitor District communications for up-to-date information regarding the school year.
    • Visit The Parent Academy for webinars, resources and up-to-date information on distance learning.
    • Ensure that your children know their usernames and passwords for instructional resources and encourage their participation in distance learning offerings as able.
    • Maintain communication with your children’s teachers and school counselor(s).
    • Engage your children in conversations regarding assignments.
    • Monitor time spent engaging in online and offline learning.
    • Support your children’s emotional balance by providing time for physical activity and play.
    • Learn about using parental controls to create a safe online environment for your student.

We recognize that each family is navigating unique challenges, so we hope that this guidance will support you and your family as we figure out distance learning together.
