    What are application schools?

     Application schools are schools that require students to apply for admissions. They often offer specialized programming such as education in fine and performing arts, foreign language immersion or gifted and talented programming.

    How many application schools are there in the district?

    There will be 17 for the coming year. 

    What are the qualifications?

    They vary, and may include: a minimum grade point average (GPA), minimum test scores, demonstrated talent and/or proficiency, among other criteria.

    Are Montessori schools included?
    No. If you are interested in a Montessori school, you may sign up for more information here or contact Dr. Ursula Kelley-Wash, Ursula.kelley-wash@detroitk12.org, (313) 873 - 8966.  

    How can I learn more about each school?

    Each school is offering opportunities for parents and prospective students to take a tour. Check out the calendar of scheduled tours here.

    If an application school has Pre-Kindergarten, is the Pre-K program included in this admissions process?

    No. Please contact the Office of Early Childhood for more information. Applications only apply to students entering grades K-12.

    Will I have an advantage if my child is enrolled in Pre-K at an application school? 
    No, however, if the child has a sibling already in the school, they will receive a higher priority. 

      

    THE APPLICATION

     How do I apply?

    Applications will be accepted online only. Visit detroitk12.org/applicationschools and click on the Apply Here button after 10 a.m. on Monday April 8, 2019, to start the process.

    I don’t have a computer at home, and don’t have a way to start my application, and I need help with uploading documents.

    The application is mobile-friendly, and you can do it all on a smartphone. If you prefer, you can visit one of the application schools, or check out one of our Parent Workshops. Be sure to bring all documents with you. You will have access to a laptop and someone to assist you with scanning and uploading your documents.

    Whose contact information should I enter at the beginning of the application?
    The contact information provided on page 1 of the application should be for the parent or guardian who can serve as the primary contact person for the student. Make sure you have regular and frequent access to the email address used to create this account; all major communications will be sent to this email. In most cases it is best if this email is that of the parent or guardian.

    I need to change the email address on my account. How do I do that?

    You can change the account email by clicking "Settings" from the user menu found in the top right of the browser, then clicking "Update Profile Info."

    I’m interested in more than one school. How many schools can I apply for in this process?

    You may apply for up to three schools. You will be required to rank your preferences.

    How will I know if my child was accepted?
    Final notifications will be provided on or before May 31, 2019. It will be sent via email, or you can log into your Submittable account to see your results.

    I had some problems with my application. Can I just start a new one?
    No. You may make changes to your application before submitting. You may save drafts and return to it anytime before the deadline on May 1. If a student submits multiple applications, the first one will be accepted.

    How do I save my application so I can return to it later?

    You may save and come back to your application submission at any time by scrolling to the bottom and clicking "Save Draft." You can access it and resume editing by clicking on "Submissions", "Saved Drafts" and then "Continue."

    I submitted my application, but realize I need to make a change.

    If you would like to change, edit, or modify something on an application that has already been submitted prior to the application deadline, you can click into the application submission and then click "Edit" on the top right of the submission detail page.

    I have general questions about application schools.
