Soar Detroit has partnered with Carleton to provide a reading tutorial program during the day to help students increase their literacy skills. Since 2005, Soar Detroit has been instrumental with helping children increase on average 2.3 reading grade levels after one year of consistent participation in the program. They create an individualized learning plan based on the diagnostic needs of each student and coordinate one-on-one mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. The mentors use an instructional sequence that incorporates four essential components designed to maximize student growth and development into stronger readers.

    Instructional Components

    • Skills: 10-15 minutes of direct instruction of skills specific to each child's needs
    • Active Reading: 15-20 minutes of active reading, discussing, and demonstrating comprehension of text
    • Writing: 10-15 minutes of journal writing using grade level sentence structures and vocabulary
    • Vocabulary: 5-10 minutes to review grade level vocabulary words and word banks

    Targeted Students

Our Soar Detroit program will provide services to third graders in response to the Read by Third Grade Michigan Law.  In 2016, the Michigan legislature passed the law which requires schools to identify students who are struggling with reading and writing and to provide additional interventions to get them on grade level. Carleton is committed to doing everything we can to work with students and families to help students close their academic gaps and reach grade level performance levels.
