Posted by Principal Perry on 4/27/2025

Greetings MLK Family! Spring has finally Sprung and here are your Sunday Notes!

Senior Updates-  The Class of 2025 school year is quickly coming to an end! Please remind Senior about these very important dates

Senior Final Exams- May 12th,13th, 14th with Make Up Exams given on May 15th. Senior Last Day in the building is Friday, May 16th.

Senior Townhall- On Tuesday April 29th during 2nd hour we will be hosting a Senior Town Hall. During this session we will be discussing Edgenuity deadlines (May 5th), final grading, and other important Senior information.

It's Getting Hot In Here- As the weather warms up please have conversation with your student regarding MLK Dress Code Expectations this includes and is not limited to crop tops, skirts length that is higher than the top of the knee cap, grey sweatpants, flip flops, shorts, visible undergarments in pants, skirts, and shirts. We are attempting to prepare our students for the jobs and careers of tomorrow, TODAY. Join us in keeping expectations at MLK HIGH!

MLK Hallsweeps- Last weeks round of hall sweeps  spoke volumes to help us maintain an orderly and conducive environment. This week we  will once again be implementing them  and continuing throughout the school year randomly.

Please remind your student that the goal of hall sweeps is to minimize tardiness, reduce disruptions, and increase instructional time for all students. By encouraging promptness and accountability, we aim to build habits that will serve students well in and beyond the classroom.

Have conversations with your child about the importance of being on time and prepared for class. Encourage them to use their passing time wisely and to always carry a hall pass when outside of class during instructional time.
We appreciate your support and partnership in helping our students grow academically and socially.

MLK Shout Outs- I would like to personally thank every member of Take the Lead Drama Club who participated in last weeks "Confession" production. Every student who participated on and off stage absolutely shined! This was further enhanced by members of the band, choir, and MLK Staff  who also assisted in making this production happen! Special shout out to  Dr. Wolford and Ms. Smith for their dedication and work! MLK shined brighter  because of what every team member did to make this production happen!

    Have an amazing Sunday!

    Good Morning MLK  Families,

Yesterday a disturbing social media post has been making its rounds and was thankfully brought to our attention depicting an act of violence against a teacher at a school called Martin Luther King High. This is not OUR Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School. It has been confirmed that this is a high school in Atlanta Georgia, where this horrific incident occurred. We remain thankful that here at MLK we develop, maintain, and grow strong relationships with our students, and environments of fear, violence and gross disrespect are not tolerated nor condoned.

Have an amazing rest of your day,

    Principal Perry

Spring Testing Is Here! - The SAT/PSAT  are standardized tests used by many colleges and universities in the United States. Preparing for the SAT sharpens your skills needed to be successful in college and skills that are needed for careers. The test itself is a valuable tool to improve your chances at getting into your desired college, understanding careers that need skills like yours, and securing your financial future.

The SAT/PSAT  can serve as a unique opportunity to showcase who you are and what you excel at. It helps you stand out among applicants with similar GPAs and extracurricular activities. Many colleges are test optional, and you should make the decision that will help most you during the college application process. Knowing what skills you excel at can also help you find a career that is a good fit or improve your skills for a career you have in mind.

A bulk of scholarships─money that you don’t have to pay back─comes from colleges, like the Detroit Promise.  Your SAT scores can support you financially in college and may qualify you for certain institutional scholarships at colleges and universities. Other organizations and private companies that award scholarships may also require your test scores as part of their application.  Please take a look at the MLK Testing schedule and assist us in getting your student prepared for a BRIGHT future!

NMSQT Opt Out- As part of the upcoming CollegeBoard assessment, students will have the option to share their personal information with the College Board for scholarship and college recruitment purposes. Please know that families and students have the right to opt out of this information sharing.
If you would like to learn more or choose not to have your student’s information shared, please have your student speak with their ELA teacher as soon as possible for details on how to opt out. Thank you for staying informed and supporting your student’s educational journey.

MLK Rev' Up to Prep Up!- The SAT/PSAT testing season is right around the corner! In order to ensure our students are prepared, and pumped about SAT. We are hosting this competition! Any student who logs into Clever, Selects Khan Academy, Selects Digital SAT as the course, and completes 20 hours by April 15th will win a day at Rev' Up for a day of go karts, zip lining, video games, and arcade games! See Ms. Russell, Mr. Johnston, AP Lewis, or Principal Perry for more information! Let's REV UP MLK Family!

School Uniforms and After School Pick Up- As the weather gets warmer more and more students are not reporting to school in uniform. Please remember the MLK uniform is black and white. Students should not be reporting to school wearing grey pants, and halter tops. All students are asked to arrive to school in full uniform, students who are not maintaining this expectation will be asked to contact parents who can bring an appropriate change of clothes.  All students who are participating in after school activities are asked to be in place by 3:45pm sharp. Students not in their designated areas will be asked to wait outside for their rides. Let's honor these MLK expectations.

MLK Take The Lead- Get ready for a must-see event—our upcoming stage play, "Confessions," presented by Take the Lead Drama Club!
This powerful and moving production tackles the real-life issue of bullying while showcasing youth leadership through social-emotional learning (SEL) and the arts.
But hurry—there are only TWO showings!

    When: April 24th & April 25th
    Time 6:00 PM
Location-King High School – Fine Arts Theatre
    Admission-$5
Don’t miss this extraordinary performance that highlights the creativity, resilience, and leadership of our talented students. Bring your family and friends for a night of inspiration, storytelling, and powerful performances!

  • Class of 2025 Academic Information

Posted by Principal Perry on 3/14/2025

Greetings MLK 2025 Parents, Partners, and Soon to be Graduates,

Spring is here and that of course means graduation is right around the corner!  As I look at the calendar there are less than 50 days until graduation. Graduation is of course a family affair, a celebration of the hard work and dedication demonstrated by your student, and proof that your years of support, love, and guidance has paid off.

Last week,  I had the opportunity to meet with the Class of 2025 and share with them some eye opening data. To date only 54% of the Class of 2025 is on track to graduate. That translates to 72 Seniors who are at least 0.5 credits off track for graduation. Every student who is labeled as “off track” have been given Edgenuity courses. While these classes are offered online, there is real face to face support that is offered to students every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30pm-5:30pm. If you have any questions about Edgenuity support please contact, your students Counselor or Mr. Cannon who can provide more information on this opportunity.

Have questions about your students’ academic progress or graduation status please reach out to members of the MLK Counseling Team today!

    •    Ms. Kaplan (anneatra.kaplan@detroitk12.org) -Students with last names starting         with A-J
    •    Ms. Barnes( denise.barnes@detroitk12.org )-Students with last names starting           with H-O
    •    Mr. Miller-(leonard.miller@detroitk12.org)-Student with last names starting with           P-Z

Lastly,  to our Class of 2025 Seniors on track and ready to walk across that stage, stay focused on graduation, continue to work in every class, and keep GRINDING! Together let’s all keep the “Main thing, the Main thing” (Which is GRADUATION) and I look forward in seeing every Senior at the Aretha Franklin Amphitheater on June 5th.

    Educationally yours,
    Principal Perry
