MLK Sunday Notes Week of Nov 18
Posted by Principal Perry on 11/17/2024Greetings MLK Family,
I hope that each and everyone of you are enjoying this beautiful Sunday afternoon and are mentally preparing for another installment of Detroit Lion's Football!
And here are your Sunday Notes:
MLK Attendance Expectations- Did you know that poor attendance has serious implications for later outcomes as well. Students that drop out in high school have been found to exhibit a history of negative behaviors, including high levels of absenteeism throughout their school careers. These differences in absentee rates were observed as early as kindergarten, and students who eventually dropped out of high school missed significantly more days of school in first grade than their peers who graduated from high school. This trend continued in eighth grade, and was even more apparent by ninth grade. Attendance was shown to be a key indicator significantly correlated with high school graduation.
Please keep in mind every day COUNTS, even 1st hour, and students who miss instructional time due to early dismissal. Remember every 3 instances of tardiness translates to 1 absence. Remember, absence excuses should be turned into the MLK Main Office, who will get all excuses to Mr. Yelder for verification and entry into PowerSchool. Please see the attached letter from Mr. Yelder and look for more information on 1st hour tardy and early dismissal tracking. Have questions on attendance please contact Mr. Yelder at joseph.yelder@detroitk12.org

MLK Quarter 1 Academic Intervention
Posted by Principal Perry on 11/15/2024Greetings Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School Family,
As the second quarter of the school year gets under way, I have an important update to share.
Any student below a 2.5 GPA will be identified as needing academic support for the remainder of the second quarter, which ends on January 15, 2025.
Please take the coming days and weeks to keep an eye on their grades and provide support to ensure that they end the semester with a Grade Point Average above 2.5, which is expected of all exam high school students including MLK.
A letter for those specific students under a 2.5 grade point average containing additional details will be sent home on Monday. If you do not receive the letter, you may log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal to view it.
Your student’s counselor and the MLK Social Worker will be reaching out soon to share details about an academic support plan that they will develop with your student to help them raise their academic performance. You will be expected to review that plan and to support your student in raising their grades.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your student’s counselor, or the MLK Social Worker, Ms. Smith.
Thank you for your commitment to your student and to our school.
Educationally yours,
Damian H. Perry M.A. M.Ed.

MLK Sunday Notes Week of November 11.11.24
Posted by Principal Perry on 11/10/2024Greetings MLK Family,
I hope that each and every one of you are enjoying this Sunday afternoon and mentally preparing for the upcoming Lion Football Game this evening.
And here are your Sunday Notes:
It's All About Attendance- This week please look for information from our new Attendance Agent on the process for submitting absence excuses. Also look for guidance on class tardies which do convert to absences after three instances of being tardy, and last but not least district exam school attendance expectations.
Did you know that your students' attendance is important because students are more likely to succeed academically when they attend school consistently. Without being there, it is difficult for the teacher to build your child's skills if they are missing multiple days of school.
Tomorrow November 11th Regular Day of School- Tomorrow will be a regular full day of school, students should report as normal at 8am and will be dismissed at 3:20pm.
Shout Out's- Congratulations to the MLK Girls Swim Team, Coach Kaplan and Coach Peters for their amazing showing on Thursday evening at Wayne State. MLK continues to dominate the Girl's Swimming, winning event after event! Thank you also goes to MLK Girls Swim Parents who continue to advocate for equity in the scoring process. Congratulations Ladies continue to present on and off the swim deck!
Congratulations are also in order for the Crusader Football Team who has gone on to win 10 District Division back to back Championships, the latest over Grosse Pointe North! Congratulations Coach Patrick and the entire Coaching Staff for their work and dedication!
Have a Sensational Sunday...And Let's Go Lions! -

MLK College Visits- Did you know that the MLK Counseling Team hosts at least 2 visits from colleges a week? Last week the Counseling proudly hosted South Carolina State University and Morehouse College! During these visits students have the opportunity to talk to recruiters, ask questions about the institution, learn about scholarships, understand the admissions process, and fully understand the majors and programs each college offers.
*College visits like these can be a critical step in choosing a college. These visits can help students narrow down their options or even decide on a school. I have included some tips on how your student can maximize these visits.
*Plan ahead: You can usually book tours and information sessions on the schools website. Ask how long the visit will take.

Regardless of age (as long as you’re 18!), ethnicity, or background, every person has the power to make a difference through their vote. Remember Voting Gives You:
1. A VOICE IN DECISION-MAKING:
Voting provides us with the opportunity to express our opinions and choose representatives who will make decisions on our behalf. By casting a vote, you have a chance to select leaders who align with your values and who will work towards addressing the issues that matter most to you, your family, and your community.
