    Ms. Spain and the NAF Captains of Industry- Tuesday, April 30, 2024 our NAF Academy of Finance students, Jesse Little, LaTrell Holman, Lavaughn Milton and Davion Rhodes took first place in the NAF FutureED Pathfinders Challenge. This challenge was aimed at enhancing career education for high school students. There were seven schools that participated, and the event was held at the Detroit Historical Museum.

    The challenge revolved around the central question: "Imagine if high school students designed the future of career education. What would it look like?" This initiative aims to enhance student learning and highlight the importance of incorporating student voices into the future of career education.

    Judges evaluated the finalists' presentations and determined King High School to be the winner of this exciting challenge. As the top team each King student was awarded $1,000. Congratulations to Ms. Spain and this amazing team for their hard work!

    MLK College and Career Day- Shout out to the MLK Counseling Team in their work to welcome scores of colleges and career presenters that ascended on MLK yesterday. Several students served as guides, servers, and helpers. Every student represented the very best of Black and Gold.

    Broadway Comes to 3200 E. Lafayette!-Shout out to Ms. Jeffries and the MLK Voices of King. Last Night the MLK Voices of King presented Broadway hits from shows like Hamilton, The Color Purple, Dream Girls, and The Greatest Show on Earth just to name a few. The pageantry, singing, and exuberance filled the auditorium, leaving the crowd salivating for more! Kudos to everyone who made last night possible!

  • MLK Tuesday Tidbits 4.30.24

    Posted by Principal Perry on 4/30/2024

    Greetings Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School Families,

    In recent weeks there has been an uptick in negative social media posts and cyber-bullying events here at the school and across the district, city, state, and nation. I wanted to take this opportunity to discuss with each of you the destructive impact these actions can have on your students within the greater MLK Community.

    Research tells us that bullying begins to peak during high school years as students begin to find their niche and become involved in sports, music, and other extracurricular activities. However, there can still be some cyberbullies who contact victims through social media and other forms of technology.

    As an example, a student received a message on the Internet saying, “Hey John, look at this website.” After going to the site, John saw his photo with the headline, “Welcome to the Website that makes fun of John Smith,” as well as pages of hateful comments directed towards him and everyone in his family. The creator of the website had others join in by posting lewd, sexual comments and smearing John’s reputation.

    This is an example of one form of cyberbullying. While the intent could have been meant as a joke, the action is one that could be investigated by the police and prosecuted by the prosecutor.

    Actions like these can be punishable outside the normal school and or district Code of Conduct, but also could be prosecutable at the city, state, county, and federal levels.

    These convictions can lead to probation, jail time, and in some cases registry on sex offender roles. Once students have criminal records, they can follow them for the rest of their lives – in college and with job applications.

    Encourage your child to think twice before setting up a website that pokes fun at someone or before they send a hateful text message to the kid in a class who “everyone” teases.

    There are several things that students can do to protect themselves. These include:
    •    Being careful regarding who they give their email address and phone
             numbers;
    •    Never giving their e-mail passwords to anyone, not even a close friend;
    •    Walking away from the computer if harassment starts; do not begin a war of
             words over the computer;
    •    Being mindful that online conversations and text messages can be
            reproduced and spread very easily. Nothing online is private.

    Remember, high school students often feel invincible, untouchable, but that sadly is not the case. Engaging in malice toward others over the Internet can become serious enough to have the police involved.

    Encourage your children to think twice before setting up sites; creating or sharing posts; or accepting messages, photos, or memes that poke fun at someone. Crusader parents let us take the additional step to regularly check in with our youth and check out their social media identities. Together we can OVERCOME CYBER BULLYING!
