We Have Osborn PRIDE...
Named after Laura F. Osborn, the first female president of the Detroit Board of Education, Osborn High School initially opened in 1957.
The school’s namesake, Laura A. Freele Osborn was a suffragist, campaigner for school reform, and long-serving school board member and former school teacher. She was the first woman elected to citywide office in Detroit. Laura was first elected to the Detroit School Board in 1917, campaigning on a platform of reform. She served on the school board for 38 years, until her death in 1955. During that time, she was selected as board president seven times. Osborn also played a role in developing Wayne State University in the mid-1930s. Laura is also credited with having mobilized women into the cause of school reform and temperance, also to have "broken the prejudice against women officeholders in Detroit". Her remarkable experiences illustrate the capacity to overcome tremendous barriers to excel and influence others to become leaders are embraced by the school community and embedded in the school’s core beliefs and values.
