Emma Munger Middle School was built in 1917 and was located at 5525 Martin Road at the corner of McGraw Avenue in Detroit’s Chadsey-Condon neighborhood, on the city’s southwest side. Munger Middle School was a brick, two-story structure that was designed in modern renaissance architectural style. Munger Middle School had a beautiful exterior that included an ivy-covered facade and gorgeous limestone trimming. Munger Middle School served students in sixth grade through eighth grade. Munger Middle School was actually attache
d to the next-door Chadsey High School through a tunnel. Students from Munger Middle School could walk over to Chadsey High Schol through the tunnel to use the swimming pool, gymnasium, and larger auditorium. Emma Munger Middle School was named after the Emma Munger, a Detroit Public Schools teacher for forty-two years. Alumni and former students of Munger Middle School were known as the “Munger Lions,” as their school mascot was a lion. Munger Middle School was a property of the Detroit Public Schools system.
In 2011, both Munger Middle School and Chadsey High School were demolished. They were only demolished a couple of years after closing. Shortly after demolition, Detroit Public Schools began to build a new school on the site of the old schools.
In 2012, a brand new, 22 million dollar state-of-the-art educational facility was built on the site of the old Munger Middle School. The new school now houses students in pre-school through eighth grade carries the name Munger Elementary-Middle School under the Detroit Public School Community District.
