Harms Elementary, located in bustling Southwest Detroit, offers a challenging curriculum and highly-qualified staff in a safe and warm environment.
Recognized as a Reward School for “Beating the Odds” by the Michigan Department of Education and one of the top 50 elementary schools in the state by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, Harms offers small class sizes to ensure students excel in every subject with teachers’ assistants in many classes.
Harms encourages a love of reading that contributes to students reading collectively more than 30,000 books throughout the year. State of the art technology is offered throughout the school, including computers in every classroom, interactive boards, iPads, and document readers.
Harms teachers use their expertise and creativity, bringing together a variety of Language Arts resources that ensure students' needs are being met and curricular content is addressed. Other programs to personalize academics include Code.org, iReady, Office 365, Typing.com, and myON Reading. Computer Applications and Physical Education classes are provided to all students in grades K-5, while extra-curricular activities include Academic Games, Chess, Girls on the Run, Baseball, Robotics, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Soccer.
Partnerships with premier educational and arts organizations help to offer robust experiences outside of the classroom, including the Inside Out Author's Club. Children learn vocabulary and other English Language Arts concepts strands through the performing arts offered through Creative Writing, allowing students to pantomime, sing and act out the stories they read in class. And Urban Neighborhood Initiatives provides a highly valuable daily after-school Homework Help Program.
The school has a rich tradition of challenging its students for nearly 100 years and counts doctors, lawyers and a past director of the FBI among its successful alumni.
With many bilingual staff who speak Spanish, Harms provides an inviting atmosphere for parents.
