Assistant principal Tapia
Ms. Cassandra Chanel Tapia proudly serves as the Assistant Principal at Harms Elementary School. A dedicated educator and advocate for multilingual learners, Ms. Tapia began her academic journey at Michigan State University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Comparative Cultures and Politics.
Her career in education started as an academic interventionist with Detroit Public Schools, where she provided targeted support for bilingual students, built strong relationships with families through home visits, and served as a vital resource for translation services. Her experiences in this role ignited a passion for teaching, leading her to pursue a teaching certificate and join the first cohort of DPSCD’s On the Rise Academy.
Ms. Tapia went on to teach English Language Arts (ELA) and Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) at Munger Elementary-Middle School. She also dedicated her summers to teaching in various DPSCD programs at Brenda Scott Academy, Priest Elementary, and Munger Elementary-Middle.
Driven by her commitment to educational leadership, Ms. Tapia earned a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from Wayne State University.
Outside of school, Ms. Tapia enjoys hosting game nights, bonfires, and dinners for her family and friends. She also loves traveling to warm destinations and exploring new cuisines.
Ms. Tapia is honored to be part of the Harms Elementary family and is deeply committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment for newcomer students. She believes that multilingual education not only honors students’ cultural identities but also strengthens their academic success.
