Mr. Cornelius Pearson

Cornelius Pearson is the Principal of Carstens Academy of Aquatic Science and has been a dedicated DPS/DPSCD employee for 20 years. Mr. Pearson encourages all of the students at Carstens to be the “best that they can be” academically and socially.  He is a 21st century instructional leader who assist students and staff members to achieve success by implementing research-based strategies and using multiple forms of data that promotes student achievement and positive school culture. 

Cornelius grew up in Detroit, Michigan and attended DPS from grades K-12, graduating from Mackenzie High School.  He received an athletic scholarship from Eastern Michigan University and went on to receive his Bachelors of Arts and Teacher Certification in Elementary Education in 1997.  In 2003 he earned his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Wayne State University.

He began working for the Detroit Public Schools in 1999 as a 5th grade Math Teacher at Bagley Elementary.  He transferred to Mackenzie K-8 and continued his love of teaching.  His career progressed and he became the Academic Engagement Administrator at Carstens in 2015.  He was then promoted as the Assistant Principal at Carstens in 2018. Mr. Pearson was named "Assistant Principal of the Year" (2018-2019) by DPSCD.
