• Welcome Back to School!

Dear Parents and Guardians of Carstens Academy,

    Welcome & COVID Protocols:

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer. I also hope you are relaxed, recharged and ready to start a new school year. I am so delighted that you are part of our amazing learning community. I welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and I look forward to working with you and your children.

After the last year of functioning in a fully virtual setting, I am excited to return to five full days of in-person instruction in the building. Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will continue to implement the COVID-19 protocols as established by DPSCD (Detroit Public School Community District). This will include the requirement for all students to wear masks while indoors and on the buses, social distancing of at least 3 feet between students where practicable, regular handwashing and/or access to hand sanitizers, daily temperature readings, and daily symptom checker questions which will be asked of all students and visitors entering the building. All visitors to our campus will also be required to wear masks. All staff will be administered weekly saliva-based testing. Collection will happen at the school site during the school day. Please avoid eating or drinking anything other than water within 30 minutes of your test. Results are sent to your cell phone in 1 -2 days. Saliva testing dates and times scheduled at Carstens will be forthcoming. We will continue to implement mitigation measures as our Superintendent determines are needed to ensure that our staff and students’ safety and well-being are prioritized.

    School Bell & Entry Procedures:

The first day of school for students is Tuesday, September 7, 2021. Our school hours are from 8:30 am – 3:40 pm. The tardy bell rings at 8:40 am. Half days at school the dismissal time is 1:40 pm.

All students must be present and on time daily. Please try to avoid picking up your child(ren) early during the school day. When students are picked up early, they lose valuable instructional time. Students will not be released after 3:15 pm for early pick up, because the office staff needs time to verify the adult ID and permissions on the School Information System. The safety and well-being of our students is a priority.

    School Uniform Expectations:

Tops: Students are allowed to wear the following polo colors: Light blue, white or navy blue

Bottoms: Black or Navy pants/skirts. (Blue jeans are not uniform attire)

Student Placement: A great deal of time, effort and thought have gone into the process of student placement for the 2021-22 school year. Careful consideration was given to input from staff and families as well as student learning styles. All our staff work hard to make school a positive experience for all students. Carstens Academy is eagerly looking forward to enriching your child’s life.

Thank you to all who are helping prepare for the new school year. Your commitment to ensuring that Carstens Academy remains a celebrated and successful school is awe-inspiring. I eagerly look forward to greeting students and families again. It remains an honor and privilege to serve as your principal. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for all children.

    Warmest Regards,

    Cornelius Pearson
