Mrs. Latisha Smith

Latisha Smith, a Detroit native, began her academic career in the Detroit Public School system over 30 years ago. Graduating from from Redford high school, Latisha went on to attend the University of Michigan to further her education. Latisha received an associates in science in 2005, a bachelor's in education in 2008, and a Masters in educational administration in 2010.

After completing her academic studies in 2008, Latisha went on to teach at University Preparatory Academy for 11 years where she thrived. During that span of time Latisha served in various roles such as head of the school improvement team, lead teacher, and instructional lead. Latisha spent the last several years passionately teaching 5th grade ELA, which she feels is her specialty. This area informs her leadership and teaching approach, as she views literacy as the foundation of academic progress.

Latisha was also a part of creating the Redeemed Christian Fellowship Ministries Mentorship Program. She has spent the last 12 years mentoring students from ages 13-18 years old. This is something that she is most proud of because she was able to build strong relationships with these students, which helped to shape their future. All of the children that were apart of the mentorship program has gone off to college and are leading productive lives. She carries all of the successful strategies used in her mentoring program into her career to help the students she serves daily.

Latisha views a collaborative school environment as the key to creating successful teachers and students. She believes partnerships with parents and community partners are essential to enriching the experience in any school aged academic environment. She also believes that true learning can take place when strong relationships are built with the student’s and families that we serve each day! Latisha is excited about being a part of enhancing the learning environment already in place at Bunche Preparatory Academy.
