Mrs. M. Villarreal

Melissa Villarreal was born in Detroit, Michigan, into a family that migrated every year for 5 months to live in Mexico and the other 7 months in Detroit, as her father was a seasonal construction worker. She began her education as a Spanish only speaking student with Detroit Public Schools. She completed the 6th grade in Detroit before moving with her family to Texas. Mrs. Villarreal returned to Michigan in 1998 and began her educational career in 2001 with Detroit Public Schools. She returned as a teacher at her former elementary school, Maybury. After having the joy and privilege of serving as a teacher at Maybury for 7 years, she was promoted to Assistant Principal at Roberto Clemente Learning Academy in the Fall of 2008. Mrs. Villarreal served as Assistant Principal for 2 years and as Principal for 5 years at Clemente. After 7 years, she continued her leadership as Principal of Amelia Earhart for 9 years. In 2024, Mrs. Villarreal will proudly serve as the new Principal of Bennett Elementary. 

Mrs. Villarreal received the 482 Forward award for her outstanding leadership in creating an inclusive environment for all stakeholders in the community. Mrs. Villarreal also received special recognition from the Mexican American National Association for building extensive partnerships within the Southwest Detroit Community.
