• Exceptional Student Education

At Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), we are committed to providing students with exceptional needs the supports, interventions, and enrichment activities required to thrive in both academic and social environments. Our dedicated team works to ensure that each student has equitable access and the opportunity to participate fully in the diverse array of educational and extracurricular offerings within DPSCD.

Through our comprehensive approach to Exceptional Student Education, we focus on creating a personalized learning environment where students receive individualized instruction and support that caters to their unique needs. This commitment to access and inclusion is foundational to our belief that every student should be able to maximize their potential and achieve success, not only in school but also in the workplace and the broader community.

Our Total Communication Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Students

DPSCD's ESE program includes a Total Communication (TC) approach for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students. Total Communication is a philosophy of teaching that incorporates all modes of communication—including American Sign Language (ASL), spoken language, lip-reading, written communication, and the use of assistive technology—enabling students to communicate in the ways that work best for them. This inclusive approach is designed to meet the diverse communication needs of each student, helping them to build strong language skills while fostering both academic and social success.

Our Total Communication program strives to provide DHH students with access to the same rigorous curriculum, high-quality teaching, and extracurricular opportunities that all DPSCD students enjoy. By doing so, we aim to equip DHH students with the tools they need to participate fully in their educational experience and transition smoothly into post-school life, whether they choose to pursue higher education, employment, or community involvement.

    Vision for the Future

DPSCD's Exceptional Student Education program is continuously evolving, with the goal of creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. By focusing on the unique needs of each learner, we aim to build a stronger, more inclusive educational community where every student has the opportunity to succeed and thrive, regardless of their abilities or challenges.
