Our Academics & Electives

We draw upon the expertise of our educators and work together to create models of outstanding achievement in every classroom. Through implementing high-quality instructional materials and transforming the academic culture in our schools, we challenge and inspire our students to thrive in the world. With a wide variety of academic and enrichment opportunities aligned with state standards, we support students in unlocking their potential as they extend their skills and talents beyond the classroom. Our core curriculum includes:

· Bilingual Education - We are committed to English Language Development for students beginning in early childhood by implementing English literacy instructional frameworks that prepare families to become independent readers and writers in English.

· English Language Arts - We are committed to nurturing and developing a strong literacy foundation for all students in the early school years by implementing literacy instructional frameworks that prepare students to become independent readers and writers.

· Math - The mathematics curriculum seeks to ensure mathematical competence and confidence in students in mathematics-rich classroom environments.

· Science - Classroom experiences in science are connected to real-world phenomena and provide opportunities to engage in science and engineering practices through exposure to STEM-related career pathways.

· Social Studies - Students gain the content knowledge, intellectual skills, and core democratic values necessary for fulfilling their civic duties in participatory democracy and effectively engaging in our global society.

Electives: Gym, Music, and Band

EL Education (English Language Arts) - The EL Education model challenges students to think critically and take active roles in their classrooms and communities. This results in higher achievement and greater engagement in school. Barton Elementary Middle gives students the academic and character-building skills they need to reach their potential as learners and leaders. Eureka Mathematics - Eureka Math^® sets a new standard for rigor, coherence, and focus in the classroom so Barton students gain a deeper understanding of the why behind the numbers, all while making math more enjoyable to learn and teach. Students use the same models and problem-solving methods from grade to grade, so math concepts stay with them, year after year. Eureka Math offers a full complement of K-7 print materials including Teacher Editions, Student Workbooks, and more. New Learn, Practice, Succeed student workbooks (Grades K–5) offer teachers multiple ways to differentiate instruction, provide extra practice, and assess student learning. Science - Every grade K-7 engages in a year-long science course allowing students to explore science content through their natural curiosity and eagerness to learn. This inquisitiveness leads to students asking a variety of questions that deepen their understanding of the world around them, recognizing patterns, and formulating answers to questions about real-world phenomena. Students will use Science and Engineering Practices to collaborate, take ownership of their learning, and make meaningful connections throughout four major units of study to deepen their understanding of disciplinary core ideas. Social Studies - The social studies curriculum is integrated with the EL Education curriculum. Students also have additional resources and textbooks that they use to learn about communities and social environments beyond their local surroundings. Students draw upon previous knowledge developing more sophisticated understandings to explore the social studies disciplines of history, geography, civics and government, and economics.
