Our Mission

Detroit International Academy for Young Women, is the only all girls public education institution in the State of Michigan. Our Lady Pink Panthers are linked by their respect of cultural diversity, awareness of socioeconomic barriers and empowerment of communities, through their accomplishments and innovations in Science and Mathematics. Building confidence, perseverance and resilience is how our young ladies will become legendary when serving their community. Being innovative is how they will become visionaries of the future.

Program Description: 

The Detroit International Academy for Young Women, a DPSCD institution, has partnered with organizations like The Humane Society and The Detroit Zoological Society, to develop our career pathway and ensure exposure to 21^st century jobs. Utilizing principles like those in the One Health Initiative our program unites Human and Veterinary Medicine.  A school-based Academy team, advisory board of industry professionals and academic institutions have been put in place to support our pipeline to career and licensing. It is the intent, that students with exposure to Biomedical Science and Pre-Veterinary Medicine will use the knowledge develop their understanding of the human and animal body, conduct medical research and create innovative technologies, cures, bionics and equipment that will save and change human and animal lives.

Biomedical science unites Human and Veterinary Medicine. These career pathways support the district’s strategic plan by ensuring that students have access to a high wage, high demand career via the completion of a rigorous program of study and a continuum of work based learning activities that aligns with college, career and life goals.

4 Pillars of a successful Pathway include: Rigorous Academics, Career and technical education Dual enrollment, Work based learning and comprehensive support services. This Document will lay out the implementation goals of our program.

About the One Health Initiative

The One Health concept is a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of health care for humans, animals and the environment. The synergism achieved will advance health care for the 21st century and beyond by accelerating biomedical research discoveries, enhancing public health efficacy, expeditiously expanding the scientific knowledge base, and improving medical education and clinical care. Why enroll in our program 

Upon completion of the academic requirements your daughter will have endorsements from Michigan Humane Society and Detroit Zoological Society, college credit and scholarships opportunities through Wayne and Michigan State.  

Year 1: Foundation in Animal Behavior and Animal Therapy 

Year 2: Animal Vs. Human Anatomy and Immunology 

Year 3: Nutrition and Diseases 

Year 4: Surgery and Pathological Conditions

Implementation 2020

Though all students in grades 9-12^th will have opportunities to experience and be exposed to biomedical Science and Veterinary Medicine, The students in our 9^th grade cohort will be the first implementation grade for which students will have a 4 year experience in the pathway. The first year the cohort students will participate in a series of workshops, activities and work-based learning opportunities, with a completion certificate. The purpose of the workshops are to begin to build skills and exposure to the Careers available within the fields of Biomedical Science and Veterinary Medicine. Dual Enrollment is also offered at this time.
