What is the FAFSA & Should I Fill it Out?

FAFSA stands for "Free Application for Federal Student Aid".

What does that mean for you? Free money!
The FAFSA is used to determine how much financial assistance you need to pay for school.

Most schools require you to fill out the FAFSA to be eligible for any of their academic/merit scholarships. No FAFSA could mean no scholarship even if you aren't eligible for federal aid.

The FAFSA is used by Federal Student Aid, an office of the Department of Education. As a federal program, you can count on your information to be safe and secure.

2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Completing the FAFSA is the first step towards receiving federal financial aid (Pell grants,
federal loans, and work-study) as well as many local and institutional scholarships!

Step 1: Documents needed (if applicable) for 2024-2025 FAFSA

Parents’ 2024 Federal Income Tax Return form
Parents’ 2024 W-2s and other records of money earned
Student’s 2024 Federal Income Tax Return form
Student’s 2024 W-2s and other records of money earned
Current Bank Statements
Records of Investments and Assets (see FAFSA Completion Tips for details)
2024 Social Security Income
Child Support Received and/or Paid in 2024
Any Other Income Received in 2024, including Untaxed Income

Step 2 Create FSA IDs

Students need an FSA ID to submit the FAFSA. One parent also needs an FSA ID if
student is dependent for financial aid purposes (not if they’re claimed as a depended on taxes).
Student and parent need separate email addresses to create their FSA IDs.
