MLK Monday Moves 5.28.24
Posted by Principal Perry on 5/28/2024
Greetings MLK Family,
I hope that each and every one of you had an amazing Memorial Day Holiday weekend and that each of you had the opportunity to enjoy family and friends and most importantly, you had the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice made by countless members of our armed forces active, duty, reserves, and veterans alike.
9th Grade Decision Day- Pathway and Program Decision Day is a new initiative here at MLK which marks the week that 9th grade students make their decision on which Pathway or Program set of electives that they will take for the next 3 years here. The available Pathways and Programs here at MLK include:
• MSAT (Math Science and Applied Technologies) Engineering and Medicine
• CSIC (Computer Science and Information Systems and Commerce
• Sports M3 (Sports Marketing, Medicine, and Management)
What Does a Decision Day “Decision” Mean for My Student– All incoming MLK 9th graders are required to take 2 courses their first year: Career Explorations and Personal Finance. In both classes students are exposed to field trips, speakers, and information on MLK’s premier Career Path Pathways and Programs with the goal of exposing them to where their future college and career will take them. During the last week in May and the first week in June, all 9th grade students will select their pathway or program. This decision paves the way for the electives that your student will take. Families and students are asked to take this decision seriously and discuss the pros, cons, your student’s preferences, your student’s Zello, or Educational Plan Results when making the decision regarding their specific Pathway or Program. Once selected your student will be “locked” in and required to take 3 electives in that specific Pathway or Program within their 3 years.
What if my student wants to take additional electives offered at MLK– The beauty of the “Pick 3” electives selection is that students have flexibility on when they can take these classes. This allows students to participate in MLK Fine Arts programming, ROTC, Swimming, Team Sports, Career Technical Education, and more!
Please see the attached 1 Pager on MLK 9th Grade Decision Day!
MLK Dress Code-Please have conversation with your student regarding the MLK dress code. As the weather get warmer and the days until the end of the year get closer and closer students often think that the rules do not apply. Please reiterate to your students that the expectations of white shirts, black pants, and closed toed shoes remain.
Shorts, crop top shirts, grey pants, and jeans are not apart of the MLK dress code. Even as the school year wraps up please assist us in enforcing these expectations, students found in non-compliance will be asked to return home and return to school in uniform.
