College and Career Day Gives Mann Students a Look at What's Possible
They say the future belongs to those who prepare for it, and on Thursday, May 9th, Mann students had the chance to get great preparation.
Thursday marked Mann's annual College and Career Day, where guest speakers from the community were invited to Mann to speak with scholars about their college and career experiences. Though Mann is an elementary school serving grades Pre-K through 5th, early college and career exploration is a vital piece of young students' education and future planning. Counselor Powell, under the direction of Dr. Simpson (principal) and with the support of Mann teachers and staff, believes that early exposure to different post-secondary options and career fields can help students see themselves in the future and work to start achieving goals.
Guests from the community included the Detroit Fire Department's Ladder 55 and the Detroit Police Department's 6th Precinct. Teachers and staff reached out to family and friends to invite such guests as lawyers, engineers, entrepreneurs in the business and creative arts space, IT supervisors, and an electrician. A bio-physicist made a special appearance courtesy of our faith-based partner, Oak Point Church.
DPSCD connections remain strong as Breithaupt Career and Technical Center lent their Counselor to Mann for the morning. College and Career Day also included guests who are alumni of Mann and the children of Mann teachers and staff who have gone on to become engineers, college students, insurance analysts, and more.
While it's easy to see what an impressive list of guests participated in College and Career Day, it was those same guests who left impressed with the curiosity, conversation, and plentiful questions from Mann students.
The goal of College and Career Day was to help students learn about jobs and careers in the real world. They also learned about the education, training, and skills needed to be successful and active members of their community. If the feedback from all involved is any indication, Mann students have begun the preparation for a great future.
