Our Academics & Electives

We draw upon the expertise of our educators and work together to create models of outstanding achievement in every classroom. Through implementing high-quality instructional materials and transforming the academic culture in our schools, we challenge and inspire our students to thrive in the world. With a wide variety of academics and enrichment opportunities aligned with state standards, we support students in unlocking their potential as they extend their skills and talents beyond the classroom. Our core curriculum includes:
- Bilingual Education - We are committed to English Language Development for students beginning in early childhood by implementing English literacy instructional frameworks that prepare families to become independent readers and writers in English.
- English Language Arts - We are committed to nurturing and developing a strong literacy foundation for all students in the early school years by implementing literacy instructional frameworks that prepare students to become independent readers and writers.
- Math - The mathematics curriculum seeks to ensure mathematical competence and confidence in students in mathematics-rich classroom environments.
- Science - Classroom experiences in science are connected to real-world phenomena and provide opportunities to engage in science and engineering practices through exposure to STEM-related career pathways.
- Social Studies - Students gain the content knowledge, intellectual skills, and core democratic values necessary for fulling their civic duties in a participatory democracy and effectively engaging in our global society.
- World Languages - Students develop effective communication in at least one world language other than English as well as cultural competence to help all our students become better-equipped global citizens.

The Office of Educator Excellence offers a curriculum that is framed by research-based principles to offer rigorous, relevant, culturally responsive professional learning for Detroit educators. Our professional learning curriculum is based on expertise from nationally recognized professional organizations, Schools of Education from higher education institutions, the Michigan Department of Education, the Office of Educator Excellence as well as local knowledge to offer the best-in-class learning opportunities for educators in all roles in the District.
Eureka Math
In March, the district convened a cohort of 54 Mathematics teachers, principals, assistant principals and AEAs to conduct an instructional materials evaluation using the IMET (Instructional Materials Evaluation Tool) of current instructional products in grades K-8. The curriculum adoption committee evaluated 16 products in total, and through the IMET, Eureka Math emerged as the certified front-runner towards a recommendation for district adoption. Our Board of Education approved the committee's recommendation on Tuesday, April 10, 2018.
Thoughtfully constructed and designed like a story, Eureka Math is meticulously coherent, with an intense focus on key concepts that layer over time, creating enduring knowledge. Students gain a complete body of math knowledge, not just a discrete set of skills. They use the same models and problem-solving methods from grade to grade, so math concepts stay with them, year after year.

EL Education offers a different approach to school improvement, and we have the results to prove that it works. We engage our students so that they become self-motivated learners. We inspire our teachers and give them the tools they need to make a difference in their students’ achievement. And we give hope to communities that have lost faith in the ability of their schools to prepare young people for success.
