Mr. Santavicca’s academic foundation was laid at Ferris State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology. His passion for the sciences drove him to further his education at Wayne State University, where he obtained a Master of Science in Science Education. His thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there. He pursued additional coursework at prestigious institutions, including the University of Michigan, U of M Dearborn, and Michigan State, always seeking to expand his expertise. Notably, he ventured into research in High Energy Particle Physics at renowned facilities such as Cornell University, Wayne State University, and Fermi Lab, deepening his understanding of the universe’s most fundamental elements.

As the lead administrator for the sophomore class, Mr. Santavicca works diligently to support students during a pivotal year in their academic journey. He understands the challenges they face and strives to create a nurturing environment where they can flourish. His approachable demeanor and genuine interest in their success make him a trusted ally for both students and parents alike. Before joining the dynamic team at Western International, Mr. Gonzalez Jr. served as an Assistant Principal at Academy of Americas High School. His experience in various educational settings has equipped him with the skills necessary to lead effectively and make meaningful changes. At Western, he took charge of the curriculum for electives, ensuring that students have access to a diverse range of classes that spark their interests and ignite their passions.

Mr. Gonzalez Jr.'s journey in education began in 1989 when he started working with Detroit Public Schools. He quickly established himself as a committed teacher and athletic director during his 15 years in the Hamtramck School District. His dual roles allowed him to impact students both academically and athletically, fostering a sense of community and teamwork that extends beyond the classroom.

In addition to overseeing the curriculum, Mr. Gonzalez Jr. is responsible for managing the athletic facilities at Western. He understands the significance of physical activity in a student’s overall development and is passionate about providing them with the best resources available. With 23 years of experience within the Detroit Public Schools Community District, she has worn many hats throughout her career, each role enriching her understanding of how to inspire and empower students. From teaching to coaching, Ms. Sutherby’s journey is a testament to her unwavering commitment to education. 

Ms. Sutherby began her career as a teacher, where she discovered her love for guiding young minds and igniting their curiosity. Her classroom became a haven for students, a place where they felt safe to explore, ask questions, and express themselves. She believed that education is not just about imparting knowledge but also about fostering a love for learning. Her enthusiasm for her subjects was contagious, and her students thrived under her guidance.

As her career progressed, Ms. Sutherby took on the role of instructional coach, where she had the opportunity to impact fellow educators. Mr. Rene Limon

A Journey of Inspiration: Mr. Limon at Western International High School

In the sunlit landscapes of the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas, a young boy named Mr. Limon dreamed big. Growing up in a community rich in culture and resilience, he learned the value of education early on. His passion for learning and helping others would eventually lead him far from home. At the age of 18, Mr. Limon earned an academic scholarship, marking the beginning of a transformative journey that took him to Michigan to pursue a teaching degree at Eastern Michigan University. 

Mr. Limon’s academic journey was nothing short of impressive. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Bilingual Education, Art and Science, followed by a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. His diverse educational background equipped him with the skills to connect with students from various backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment.

In the year 2000, Mr. Limon began his teaching career in Southwest Detroit, where he made an immediate impact on the lives of his students. His teaching journey took him to several esteemed institutions, including Cezar Chavez Academy, Earhart Middle School, Logan Elementary, and the Academy of the Americas. In each role, he brought his unique blend of creativity, compassion, and dedication, igniting a love for learning in his students.

In 2018, Mr. Limon took on a new challenge as the Assistant Principal at Western International High School. His role as the 11th-grade administrator allowed him to focus on the needs of students during a crucial time in their educational journey. He understood that the transition to upper high school years could be daunting, and he was determined to provide the support and guidance necessary for students to thrive.

At Western, Mr. Limon works closely with the English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, recognizing the unique challenges faced by students learning a new language. He believes that every student deserves a quality education, regardless of their language background. His commitment to fostering an inclusive environment ensures that ESL students feel valued and supported in their academic pursuits.

In addition to his work with ESL classes, Mr. Limon actively collaborates with the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and the Climate and Culture team. Cynthia earned her Bachelor of Science in Education and her Master’s in Education Administration from Wayne State University. Her academic journey laid the groundwork for her future as an educator and leader. With a wealth of knowledge and experience, she began her career as a middle school English Language Arts (ELA) teacher, working with students in grades 6 through 8. It was during these formative years that she discovered her true passion for teaching and mentoring young minds.

As a Master Teacher for ELA and Dean of Students at a K-8 school within the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), Cynthia honed her skills in curriculum development and student support. She worked diligently to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment, ensuring that every student felt valued and inspired to succeed. Her leadership and dedication to her students earned her the respect and admiration of both her colleagues and the school community.

Cynthia’s background is not only rooted in education; it is also deeply connected to her family’s legacy of service in the Army and Air Force. Growing up in a military family instilled in her the values of discipline, resilience, and commitment to community.
