Mrs. Lawanda Smith

“Blessed” is the word that Mrs. Smith uses to describe how she feels about becoming the Principal of Brenda Scott Academy!

Born and raised in Detroit, Mrs. Smith is a DPS graduate of Central High School (Go Trailblazers).  She attended Marygrove College, where she received her BA in Mathematics, Masters in the Art of Teaching, and School Administration Certification.

Mrs. Smith is not new to Brenda Scott Academy.  Her previous positions include being the Assistant Principal, the 6th-grade math teacher, an Instructional Coach, and Small Learning Community Leader.  Mrs. Smith’s dedication to supporting staff and students resulted in her being nominated Teacher of the Year by her colleagues during the 2019-2020 school year. Her love of education and helping students and colleagues inspired Mrs. Smith to apply and be accepted into DPSCD’s Aspiring Assistant Principal Program.  Mrs. Smith had taken a Math Master Teacher position before receiving the GREAT news that she had been hired as the Assistant Principal of BSA.  Just a year later and she is excited to jump into her new role as Principal at Brenda Scott Academy.

Mrs. Smith focuses on student growth, supporting teachers/staff, and building positive relationships with the families she serves.  As the Principal, she will continue to use her hands-on approach by spending time in classrooms, working with parents and families,  assisting where needed, completing classroom observations, and providing one-on-one feedback to teachers.
