Alfred Jones
WESTERN INTERNATIONAL CLASS OF 1965
Bronze Medal Olympic Boxer, Native Detroiter, and National Golden Gloves Middleweight Champion 1965.
Boxing was a mainstay in Detroit culture during the 20th century, where boxers as young as 14 years old spent hours in the gym dancing around the history of one 1935 National Golden Glove winner, Joe Louis. Alfred Jones himself was inspired by greats like Louis, but was memorized by the likes the boxing world had never seen before. Muhammed Ali's performance in the 1960's Olympics was the spark that lit the fire in Alfred Jones' boxing career.
Alfred would begin boxing at a very young age, and by 14 he was a Silver Gloves winner and by age 15 the Golden Gloves Junior Novice, later winning the Golden Gloves Open in 1965 while still in high school. Alfred would graduate school as the class president and earned a football scholarship to Eastern Michigan University. Reluctantly, Jones turned down the offer to go to Eastern because of the lack of room and board expenses in the scholarship.
Alfred grew up during a time of civil unrest and turmoil in the City of Detroit. Alfred's complete story can be found in the Athletesquarterly.com report, and is well worth reading. Alfred Jones was drafted into Vietnam.
Alfred was responsible for his military units' creation of a boxing team which eventually brought him back full circle to his boxing career he had started several years before.
