Thurgood Marshall Elementary/Middle School has a variety of events, fundraisers, and special programs to help raise student awareness of global issues and to promote community involvement. These include both district-wide events, and those that are exclusive to Thurgood Marshall. Our calendar is updated daily to ensure your family is kept abreast of any pertinent changes to our schedule.

Black History Celebration
Thurgood Marshall has an annual Black History program to celebrate the rich history of Black Americans. Students from Prek-8 participate with songs, poems, skits, dances, and more. For more information, contact the school at 313.494.8820.

Breast Cancer Awareness
Thurgood Marshall staff and students promote awareness of the disease in October by wearing the color pink.

Christmas Program
Students in all grade levels will choose a song, poem, or play to perform for the school and Thurgood Marshall families.

Math Bee
Thurgood Marshall students in Grades 1-5 participate in a Math Bee of division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction facts. Students compete with other peers in the grade level. Science Fair
Thurgood Marshall Elementary/Middle school students participate in a very competitive event to present their science project results in the form of a report, display board, and/or models that they have created. Science fairs allow our students to compete in STEM activities. Winners are presented with awards for their projects. Spelling Bee
Students at Thurgood Marshall participate in a Spelling Bee where they are asked to spell a broad selection of words. To compete, contestants must memorize the spellings of words as written in dictionaries, and recite them accordingly. The winner can advance to the several competitions that could lead the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. Student Council
Student Council members at Thurgood Marshall is a dedicated group of student leaders from grades 5-8 who will work with an advisor to collaborate with the school community on projects that will impact their school. They will promote citizenship, scholarship, leadership throughout the school year. Ms. Robinson, the Middle School Counselor will be the advisor for the members. Students were chosen based on their citizenship, GPA, and recommendations from their teachers.

Talent Show
An annual Talent Show provides students to showcase their talents. K-8 are encouraged to sing, play a musical instrument, dance, perform in a skit, perform stand-up comedy, or any other unique talent. For more details, contact the school at 313.494.8820.

Veterans Day
Students at Thurgood Marshall participate in Veterans Day activities to honor the men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The activities include delivering items to the Veterans Hospital in Detroit and sending letters of encouragement to the troops overseas. In addition to the activities, a Veterans Day program is held to help students learn from speakers who have served in one of the armed forces. World International Day
Thurgood Marshall Elementary/Middle School participated in World International Day. Staff members decorated their classroom doors with over 200 countries. Students were able to visit each door with passports and they wrote down information about each country.
