Moments in Black History at Emerson

Emerson's "Moments in Black History."

3rd Annual Black World History Tournament

On March 3, 2025, the Emerson School hosted its much-anticipated 3rd Annual Black World History Tournament, a dynamic and inspiring event that brought together students, educators, and community members to celebrate the rich and diverse contributions of Black individuals throughout history. This year’s tournament was held in the school's auditorium, which was filled with an air of excitement and anticipation.

The event, created to foster awareness and appreciation for Black history beyond the confines of traditional classroom lessons, was unlike any other. Teams of students from various grades competed in a series of interactive and thought-provoking challenges. These challenges ranged from trivia questions about Black inventors, artists, and leaders, to live debates on the impact of pivotal movements like the Civil Rights Movement and Black Power.

Emerson Middle School Science teacher, Mr. Ostroski gave an excellent jam session with both his guitar and banjo and taught the students and spectators a lesson on the history of blues and rock 'n' roll music, and its origins in Black music and gospel. Don’t let the skin color fool you, Mr. Ostroski was born and raised in Detroit and has a lot of rhythm and soul!

Third Graders Create a "Black History Wall of Dignity" to Celebrate African American Heritage

In an inspiring move to honor Black history, a group of third-grade students at Emerson Elementary came together to create a "Black History Wall of Dignity." This student-led project aimed to celebrate the achievements, contributions, and history of African Americans, while fostering a sense of respect and understanding among their peers.

The wall, located outside of room 210 in the Annex Building, is more than just an art installation. It is a living tribute to figures in Black history whose legacies continue to shape the world today. Students worked diligently to research, design, and bring their vision to life, incorporating historical images, notable quotes, and illustrations that highlight influential African American leaders, activists, artists, athletes, and more.
