the Carr Center leverages the essence of the African American cultural experience to inspire, entertain, challenge and educate. It is a place where artists, across all disciplines, and community come together.
What We Do …
the Carr Center accomplishes our mission through three core programs: the Carr Center Presents, the Carr Center Arts Academy and the Carr Center Contemporary.
the Carr Center Presents… brings performing and visual arts to metro-Detroit. Art exhibitions feature national, regional and local artists. Performances this season will include our MSU Jazz @ the Carr series, a musical tribute to the genius of Stevie Wonder, and a series celebrating the 100th Anniversary of The Harlem Renaissance. Additional offerings will include dance, poetry readings, chamber music, storytelling, and a film series.
the Carr Center Arts Academy is our arts education programming arm. Arts education and training in visual art, music, dance and musical theater and film. Through the Academy, the Carr Center offers both in school classes and multi-week summer intensive programs. Academy master classes and workshops are conducted by our co-artistic directors, artists in residence and the world class artists visiting or presented by the Carr Center or our partners either in concert or in exhibition throughout the year. Our youth education program offerings are housed at the Detroit School of Arts,
Also under the Academy umbrella are professional development programs for early career visual and performing artists. These seek to level the playing field for early career artists.
There are currently two such programs: the Independent Scholars Fellowship (ISF) and The Gathering Orchestra.
the Carr Center Contemporary is the Carr Center’s newest program hub. The Contemporary consists of two spaces—the Carr Center Gallery which will be a dedicated space for the visual arts, and the Carr Center Performance Studio which will serve as a non-traditional performance and art venue and multidisciplinary rehearsal space. As an incubator, laboratory and stage for the exploration and advancement of visual and performance the Contemporary will balance commitments to tradition with experimentation and innovation.
Our new venue is located on the first floor of the historic Park Shelton building in Detroit’s midtown cultural center. the Carr Center Gallery, will open this year on October 19th. The Carr Center Performance Studio is scheduled to open in early 2020.
