Garvey hosts several annual events to help raise student awareness of global issues and to promote community involvement. Some of our activities are specific to Marcus Garvey Academy while others are district wide events.

Kwanzaa Celebration
Every year, the Garvey family participates in a celebration of Kwanzaa! Our students, staff, and parents present songs dances, storytelling, poetry reading, and more to mark the occasion.

After School Tutoring
After-school tutoring is provided for Garvey Scholars and is designed to close the achievement gap identified by classroom teachers.

Curriculum Night
Garvey's Curriculum Night is for parents and guardians to meet teachers and Support Staff to learn about both grade level curriculum and expectations for the school year. Every Cuuriculum Night ends with students and parents playing and learning about games that will enhance learing.

Honor Roll Assembly
Marcus Garvey Academy students are recognized for their academic achievement periodically throughout the school year. Student who have gone above and beyond in academics, attendance, and citizenship are honored. Students earn various awards such as Attentdance, Citizenship, Dean's List, and Principal's Club.

Field Day

Career Day
Garvey Career Day is a highly structured Career Awareness activity in which business partners from a variety of companies come visit the school to share information about their company, their job, and the education and skills that are required for success in their career.

Black History Program
To celebrate Black History month, students research different black history figures and events. At the end of the month, students and/or classes present a performance or report.

Spirit Week
Every year, sometimes twice a year, Garvey hosts a Spirit Week for students and staff. Everyone is encouraged to have a little fun by having Pajama Day, Twin Day, Garvey Pride Day, and more.

Spelling Bee
Once a year, Garvey students participate in a school-wide Spelling Bee. Student compete against their grade level classmates using words from their weekly Spelling Lesson.

Math Bee
Once a year, Garvey students participate in a school-wide Math Bee. Student compete against their grade level classmates in math basic facts.
1-2: Addition/Subtraction Facts within 20
3-5: Multiplication and Division Facts with digits 1-15

Fire Safety
During October, National Fire Prevention Month, Detroit Fire Chief James Harris visits our students to talk about fire safety.

Field Trips
Every grade level participates in at least two field trips a year!
