About Us

The Detroit School of Arts Theatre Department is the premier destination for theatre arts in the city of Detroit! We are the only high school in DPSCD that offers a full season of mainstage shows to all students, including a straight play, a monologue competition, and a professional musical. Auditions for mainstage shows are open to all students who attend DSA. DSA Theatre believes that theatre is for everyone!
Our mainstage offerings are only possible because of the diverse theatrical curriculum that the department offers. Led by Mrs. Leija, Mrs. Josephson, and Mr. Huff, who combined have over 40 years of theatrical experience, the DSA Theatre Department prepares students for the professional world. Students learn about all the parts of theatre, from stage makeup to light and sound, to set design and construction, to business management, directing, acting, and everything in between.
The mission of DSA Theatre is to showcase the incredible talent of the city of Detroit and prepare students for the professional world of theatre and beyond. Last year, we participated in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. We were proud to earn an honorable mention in technical theatre and to sponsor the Winner for Best Actor in a Musical in the state of Michigan! We were also awarded two grants, written and applied for by students, from the Detroit Public Schools Foundation and the Educational Theatre Association. These are just a few examples of how DSA Theatre produces professional, well-rounded individuals who are prepared for many careers and professional endeavors. The department encompasses a wide range of people. It is a family of creative, talented, intelligent individuals who learn and grow together to make the world (and our productions!) a better place.
