A Week of Joyful Celebrations

As the year draws to a close, Marcus Garvey Academy brought the community together with a spectacular week of festivities to celebrate the end of 2024. The celebrations included a lively Spirit Week, a Kwanzaa program, an exciting staff versus students volleyball game, and a delightful Pre-K and Kindergarten gingerbread house workshop with parents.

Students and staff showcased their creativity and school spirit during Spirit Week, which featured themed dress-up days such as Funny Hat/Sock Day, Pajama Day, Jersey Day, Holiday Sweater Day, and Hoodie Day. Each day brought a wave of excitement, with classrooms filled with colorful attire and festive energy. “Spirit Week is always a highlight of the year,” said Dean of Culture, Mama Roper. “It’s wonderful to see everyone come together to celebrate our school community in such a fun and engaging way.”

The week also included a special Kwanzaa program that highlighted the cultural significance of the holiday. Students performed songs, dances, and recitations, celebrating the seven principles of Kwanzaa. The event served as a meaningful opportunity to educate and inspire, fostering a deeper appreciation for cultural traditions.

In a spirited match, staff and students faced off in a volleyball game that had everyone cheering. The game was a testament to the camaraderie and mutual respect within the Garvey community, with laughter and teamwork taking center stage. “The volleyball game was so much fun,” said one student. “It’s not every day you get to challenge your teachers in a game!”

Parents joined their Pre-K and Kindergarten children for a delightful gingerbread house-making workshop. The hands-on activity brought smiles to young faces as they worked together to create edible masterpieces. Parents appreciated the chance to participate in their children’s school experience and create lasting memories.

Marcus Garvey Academy’s week of celebrations exemplified the school’s dedication to building a strong, connected community. By combining fun, tradition, and togetherness, the academy ensured that 2024 ended on a high note—with joy, laughter, and a sense of unity that will carry into the new year.
