Empowering Tomorrow's Healthcare Leaders

Collage of students working with the body

Wayne State University, in collaboration with Ascension, the Wayne State School of Medicine, and Detroit Public Schools, initiated a program called The GOALS (Go out and love science). This program provided an incredible opportunity for students, with Garvey being one of the four schools selected to participate. The experience was truly remarkable.

During the program, students engaged in various hands-on activities. They learned to conduct blood pressure readings, perform CPR to music, control bleeding, and explore different healthcare career paths through a game called "Life." Following lunch, students had the chance to handle a human brain, practice suturing (stitching synthetic skin), identify body parts using x-rays, and utilize a sonogram to capture images of the neck and wrist. Overall, it was an enriching experience for all involved.
