Celebrating Young Writers
Students in grades 3-8 recently had the opportunity to showcase their writing skills in Garvey’s January Essay Contest, organized by Baba Wilson, a dedicated educator who holds monthly writing competitions to inspire young minds. This month’s essay question challenged students to answer: Who was Marcus Garvey, and why is he considered a pivotal figure in history?
Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican-born leader, was a key figure in the early 20th-century Black empowerment movement. He is best known for founding the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and advocating for Black pride, economic independence, and unity. His vision of self-determination and progress continues to inspire people today.
The contest saw outstanding entries, with three young writers emerging as winners. Third place went to Daysn Allen, who received a $10 prize. Faith Dozier earned second place and a $25 award. The first-place winner, Mai Essence, impressed judges with her essay and took home the top prize of $50.
Thanks to Baba Wilson’s commitment to fostering literacy and critical thinking, students have a platform to develop their writing skills each month. Congratulations to all participants for their hard work and thoughtful essays!
